Question of the Week...

Question of the Week...

I know it’s still February, but can I do my spring cleanup in my garden?  This time of year, everyone is itching to get out in the garden and get it ready.  It might be just a bit too soon for that though, at least for the Northern half of the country.  It can be hard to stay out of the garden, especially when we get a few days of warm weather during these thaw days.

It’s best to leave the garden be at least for another month or so.  Try to keep those random piles of leaves gathered around you plants and don’t trim back any old foliage just quite yet.  Even though it is warming up it is still very possible to have a cold period yet, your plants still need some protection.

Two things could be possible if you expose your plants too soon.  If we do get a cold snap, anything that was dormant cold be affected.  This could delay break of dormancy or loss of vigor.  Also, and more importantly, any vegetation that may have sprouted prematurely in the warm days will be exposed to the cold environment if you remove any leaves or debris around the growing point of the plant, this could be very detrimental to plant growth.

Now let’s talk about hellebores.  They can be a little exception to this above rule.  They like the cold and will be one of first to flower.  Keep an eye on your hellebores, go ahead and clip away the old, browning leaves, but leave any loose leaves that have gathered around the emerging flowers.  This will protect the emerging hellebore flowers from any cold snaps that may occur.

Why Isn't My Succulent Colorful
Why Isn't My Succulent Colorful

The thing about succulents is they are, well I like to compare them to mood rings.  They change their colors based on how happy they are.  When they are happiest, they tend to exhibit their best self, their best colors.  So to get those blue or red tints make sure you are giving your succulent exactly what it wants.
