Petasites japonicus 'Variegatus'

Petasites (pet-a-site-ease), sometimes called butterbur or Japanese coltsfoot, is not a perennial you will find in everyone's garden or in the ordinary garden center.  Petasites is an underused, unique perennial.  It has large rounded leaves with yellowish, lime green splashes of color on the leaves.  Petasites prefers moist soils and can be quick grower.  Be sure to give this hardy perennial room to grow.  Plant in part to full shade for best performance.  In early spring, creamy white flowers emerge out the ground, staying small, prior to the foliage emergence.  Height 36 inches.  Spread 48 inches.  Hardiness zones 5-9.
