Platycodon or balloon flower, as some know this perennial by, is one all around good performer that is seemingly under used in the gardens. The balloon flower common name comes from the bud shape before the flower opens. The bud is an enclosed balloon of petals resembling a hot air balloon. Both the flowers and the buds give wonderful visual interest to any garden setting. Platycodon emerges from winter dormancy late in spring and the first growing points coming out of the ground are dark green and purplish, which easily blend in with the mulch or soil. So pay extra attention to these come spring to be sure they are not being over looked. Once established, balloon flowers are fairly drought tolerant. Blooms arrive midsummer atop sturdy, thick stems. Plant in full to part sun for best performance. Height 8-10 inches. Spread 6-8 inches. Hardiness zone 3-8.
